A user has downloaded the authentic lmms.exe file from sourceforge and is experiencing a warning of a possible trojan : Trojan[Packed]/Win32.Katusha , read more about it here on the lmms-users g+ site http://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/100054839076214124801

also note on linux 64 bit i did a clamav scan on the same file and have a warning of a possible threat PUA.Win32.Packer.CreativeAudioFi my error could possibly be related to using pua detection and getting a false positive, but it would be good to hear someone with more insight to see what could be causing this, and to reassure users that our project is 100% safe

It's almost certainly a false positive, if the file is from the official site.

There's always the tiny chance that sourceforge has gotten hacked and all the hosted files compromised. Someone could run a diff with the exe file and a known good installer just to be sure, but I think the possibility is very remote and a false positive is almost infinitely more probable.

False positives are a real problem for smaller software developers and free software projects on windows. It's funny how the false positives almost never seem to strike any software from any major software companies that employ legal teams, and if they do the situation gets corrected very, very fast. Whereas for smaller developers, it can take months to get a false positive corrected in their database - and in many cases, they make reporting false positives as hard as possible..

Sean finn explode download torrent. But I digress. TL;DR - yeah, it's probably nothing, but if you're paranoid you can have someone check the file.

This brings to mind.. Do we have any sha256 or md5 checksums for our hosted packages? If not, we should probably start using them.

@diizy yeah if the user doesnt just dl the file directly but goes through the parent folder method on sf, then there are SHA1 and MD5 checksums . Good point about commercial versus open source community projects btw :) I think it should be checked, just to give users peace of mind, and possibly a routine as in a cronjob type of method of checking the integrity of the hosted files with some kind of warning system if this is even possible?

Yeah, if we're nitpicking, to be safe, the checksums should be hosted on
a different server than the actual files.

All it takes is for one of our admin user accounts to be compromised. weak password, spear-phishing email, .. The official releases need to be hosted at a real datacenter (sf.net is fine) but we can't be loosey-goosey with access to this resource.

That would not solve the problem.

Regarding the virus alert: all LMMS installers are built via cross compiling and all binaries inside built from source on Linux, so it's very unlikely that a virus got in. I also compared md5 sums of the files at sourceforge and the original files which I uploaded. They are identical so we can calm down :-)
